Bat Rescue
So, the other night we were walking down by the river
We started seeing flying foxes flying around and skimming the water, so I figured they must be hot. I had just read that article about all the bats dying in queensland. It was unusual to see them by the river and it was a lot earlier then they usually start flying around.
Saw one hanging right by the trail, with a baby:
Then we saw one right on the path- thought it was dead at first, then it looked over at me. It looked like neko.
Long story short, I looked up animal rescue on my phone. They have been monitoring the bat colony all week because f the heat, setting up water sprayers to keep them cool. They put me in touch with a bat person, who was about 40 min away. She said it was very important, and to stay with the bat if we could. Then we saw 2 more, flopping around on the ground bc they couldn't fly. They were baby ones.
She showed up, and fed them some water and juice, and took them to a caretaker who is watching several. As of today the ones we found are doing good, and hopefully will be released back into the colony after they're back in full health.
According to the rescue group, Adelaide lost over 100 flying foxes because of the heat. There is only one colony in town. They spent a lot of time cooling them down and probably saved a lot of them. There are quite a few in care, including the ones we found. I gave them $20 to help buy fruit to feed them.
